What Others are Saying

A little instrument with a big heart. Ukuleles have a way of bringing joy, community connection and appreciation.

A July 2010 article in the local section of The Cincinnati Enquirer shared how a little girl at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center was enjoying FLEA ukuleles donated during our May kickoff event … her mom strumming right along. Click here (TJA Enquirer) to read or download.

Our kit donations to pediatric hospitals are funded by delighting a growing base of marketplace buyers. The more kits we sell, the more we donate. Here’s what early players are saying:

Fantastic instrument & kit arrived safe, saves me from buying it all on my own! – Jim, eBay Store purchaser

Got it. All tuned up and ready to go. I’m very excited! – Betsy, Cincinnati area music therapist, just after picking up her kit at Clovernook

Play it everyday! I can strum the Sunrise chords in many different ways, and learned Over the Rainbow from the internet. – Sarah, middle school student

Awesome! I own all types of acoustic instruments … this is the best ukulele I’ve ever played. My stepson plays it, now my wife is starting to pick it up. – Brian, Cincinnati area barber

These comments are not all that different from FLEA ukulele reviews posted by experienced players on Google and YouTube.

Our program aims to equip any player with a FLEA ukulele … plus the essential gear to learn it fast … enjoy all the FUN and learn some fresh techniques, regardless of personal circumstances or prior ukulele experience.

Enjoying the Simple Moments

Sarah, Bailey, pond-side ukulele music - July 2010

The simple joy of connecting with music, enjoying the fresh outdoors, sharing the moment with a friend.

The kind of image you’d see browsing through any edition of LIFE magazine … remember when you had or made the time to do that?

This photo of my daughter, Sarah, was taken discreetly at a weekend get-away on a Kentucky farm. No staging, no posing, no predetermined photo op mission … just a candid slice of life image that inspired a quick snapshot and sharing it via the wonders of cyber technology.

Bailey, the furry 7-year old companion, has recently been diagnosed with cancer. Who says Music Therapy is just for human souls?

The founding mantra of True Joy Acoustics … BE TRUE, CONNECT, MAKE JOY … could not be expressed any better.

Ukulele and Peter Frampton

Peter Frampton. Superb guitarist, rock star legend, lifelong musician who plays with vibrant heart and soul.

It all began by strumming a close cousin of the ukulele –– a banjolele from his grandmother –– with his father teaching him a few chords to play Tom Dooley and Michael, Row Your Boat Ashore at the age of 7.

Peter Frampton shares how the Banjolele formed the roots of his musicianship (segment begins at 1:45 into 7:48 video)

A banjolele has 4 strings and is fretted, tuned and played like a ukulele; however, it has the body of a small banjo which provides distinctive banjo sound and volume.

Mr. Frampton recounts this career inspiration when describing the song track “Vaudeville Nanna and the Banjolele” from his latest album entitled Thank You Mr. Churchill. Click here for YouTube video link. The song is autobiographical, and in his own words: “the title of the song is me, equals Peter Frampton”.

What a great testimony to the power of musical inspiration from within the family … starting small and simple with easy strums and songs … evolving it into a 53 year guitarist journey and still keeping it fresh and strong.

Our UKULELE Kits Now Available on eBay Store

Creating a sense of Grand Opening in the expanding universe of cyber stores and information flow is a daunting challenge.

Virtually an infinite number of offerings beckon the virtual shopper.  Many shop remotely while on the go, multi-tasking, juggling their daily (and nightly) to-do’s.

“Managing information overload” is more critical than ever.  Researchers from the University of California in San Diego recently reported: “the average American consumes about 34 gigabytes of data and information each day –– an increase of 350 percent over nearly three decades.”  About 100,000 words a day processed via print, Web, TV and radio.

Of course, this massive flow also represents a powerful way to reach millions of shoppers if you uniquely have what they need or want.

Thankfully, “computer screen corner stores” called EBAY and AMAZON create consolidated venues that help manage the target consumer and product search connections.  And so there we are.

Hopefully there will be ample ukulele kit purchases just in time for summer … a relaxing way to enjoy the simple pleasure of strumming some music … letting those gigabytes fly right by … at least for awhile.

Moms and Music

The Big Picture: We all have one.  MOM.  With an estimated 82.5 million moms in the USA, we all have much to celebrate on this special day.  Especially those new to life in the 11,000 births happening today, and any other day on average.

Many moms are young and near … some may be far away … others have parted from the world and Census counting altogether.  Nevertheless, always a MOM.

Moms make the best music, even if they don’t know how to read a stick of music.  If not for moms, the world would have no great composers, performers, music legends, even our American Idol contestants that entertain and inspire.

The first true musician in all of our lives, their own natural way.  Lullabies that soothe us as infants, simple melody songs or hums that help us learn to communicate.  It often doesn’t stop there.  Music lessons, reminders to practice, school concerts, recitals, competitions and so on.  A child learning music knows that they always have at least one gracious and appreciative audience called MOM.  Rest is gravy.

So today, whether music minded or not, let us all applaud the music of our moms!

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center – DONATION Event

True Joy Acoustics – Thursday May 6, 2010 was “open for business” day!

Ahead of any sale, we started with a FIRST DONATION of FIVE ukuleles to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in the morning. Each FLEA ukulele was packed with accessories by Clovernook Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. The instruments go directly into Brian Schreck’s music therapy program. Media from the hospital and local Fox News (channel 19) participated. Nice coverage on 6pm and 10pm broadcasts.

Over 50 ukulele/accessory packs were assembled by a skilled worker team at Clovernook Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Awaiting orders!

More news to come. I am confident that Brian and the other 2 music therapists at CCHMC (Jenn Korff, Kathryn Yeager) will put these instruments and kits to great use with children they help at the hospital. Some are there for weeks and months at a time. We’re going back for a visit in about a month to see how it’s going. Fox 19 indicated interest to do a followup story!

Check out this short video (by Margaret McGurk) of Brian and Jenn warming up the first donated FLEA ukulele. Nice rendition of a very familiar song!
