THANK YOU “Together We Fight” in Dayton, OH

THANK YOU to Together We Fight for sponsoring a colorful set of THREE concert FLEA ukuleles for the new music therapy program at Dayton Children’s Hospital.

Together We Fight is a Dayton based foundation started by the families of Ally Barnett and Caulin Booher. Both children successfully battled leukemia at Dayton Children’s.

What’s it like to be a child receiving a cancer diagnosis and life saving interventions? How does it feel as their parents or sibling? Caulin Booher and his family provide an inspirational glimpse in the hospital website’s Patient Story and video:

Together We Fight supports kids diagnosed with cancer via gift bags packed with ample supplies: pillow pets, gas cards, parking tokens, gift cards, games, other items for a long hospital stay. They send a powerful message: you’re not alone, we’re in this together. Follow on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/TogetherWeFightCancer/) to see and help their fundraising.

We share a similar mission of togetherness. FLEA ukuleles donated via True Joy Acoustics weave a heartfelt MUSICAL connection among patients, families, therapists, purchasers, sponsors and broader community.

Music therapy started May 2017 at Dayton Children’s main campus. Lindsey Steinbrunner, MT-BC packs a 3-day schedule serving up to 15 patients (going basis) in their rooms using a basic instrument set. FLEA ukuleles will boost the hospital’s music therapy capability and joy.

Each FLEA ukulele can reach hundreds of patients in the years ahead given their ease of play, durability, resilience to sanitization procedures. They are central to our hospital donation concept (i.e., instruments well suited for Music Therapy sessions AND loaning to patients for 24/7 therapeutic play) at leading pediatric hospitals since 2010.

Please consider joining this heartfelt cause. Making a contribution to our “Ukuleles for Hospital Music Therapy” campaign on GoFundMe will bring more holistic care to those in critical care settings:

THANK YOU Hauer Music in Centerville, OH

THANK YOU to Jim Hauer of HAUER MUSIC for donating a premium Little Martin guitar and case to the new music therapy program at Dayton Children’s Hospital. Not the standard model: an ED SHEERAN signature edition!

True Joy Acoustics originated its hospital donation concept (i.e., instruments well suited for Music Therapy sessions AND loaning to patients for 24/7 therapeutic play) at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in 2009 with a Little Martin guitar. Instant patient thrills, versatile music therapy “tool”.

When I discovered the recent startup of music therapy at Dayton Children’s and mentioned it to Jim, he instantly responded with “I’d love to help out the music therapy cause for Dayton area families”. Then he offered up this superb instrument. Wow!

Have you seen Ed Sheeran perform with this guitar? Phenomenal one-man show with guitar, looper pedal and incredible vocal artistry! Equally impressive is how this this young star shares his time off stage. Check out this fresh video of Ed with patients inside the Seacrest Studio at Boston Children’s Hospital:

Music therapy started May 2017 at Dayton Children’s main campus. Lindsey Steinbrunner, MT-BC packs a 3-day schedule serving up to 15 patients (going basis) in their rooms using a basic instrument set. The addition of this guitar, along with other premium instrument donations, will boost the hospital’s music therapy capability and joy.

Can you imagine being a child stuck in the hospital? Yet feeling the thrill of jamming along with or playing the same guitar model Ed Sheeran plays on stage and his albums? And all the while, not being mindful of where you are and why? This instrument is exceptionally durable and will reach hundreds of patients in the years ahead.

Hauer Music (www.hauermusic.com) is an easy reach for broader Dayton/Cincinnati metro area. Their large showroom, lesson studio and performance stage is situated in the heart of Centerville, Ohio, just minutes from the Dayton Mall, Interstates 75 and 675, State Routes 725 and 48 and historic downtown Centerville at 528 Miamisburg Centerville Road. Only 20 minutes north of Cincinnati Premium Outlets mall in Monroe.

There’s good reason Hauer Music is celebrating 80 years of existence. Jim is the third generation owner. He stocks virtually every instrument you and family members want to play, plus all the accessories and lessons you’d ever need for exceptional musicianship. THANK YOU C. F. Martin & Co.

THANK YOU to C. F. Martin & Co. for donating two premium “0X Uke” instruments with colorful red and blue bamboo finishes, plus Martin cases. Special thanks to Kristi B.

Martin 0X Bamboo ukulele set

C. F. Martin & Co. (Nazareth, PA) is America’s premier GUITAR maker. Over 180 years! Fun fact: Martin turned out more UKULELES than guitars during the 1920’s given the ukulele boom triggered by a 1915 Pan-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco.

What makes this donation special is that True Joy Acoustics originated its hospital donation concept (i.e., instruments well suited for Music Therapy sessions AND loaning to patients for 24/7 therapeutic play) in 2009 with a “Little Martin” guitar. Brian Schreck, MA, MT-BC relayed its instant reception and full-time utility at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

Brian Schreck - Little Martin Guitar - Aug 2009 - 300dpi600x900

The Little Martin’s impeccable quality and “high pressure laminate” construction (holds up to rigorous sanitization) enabled it to become a versatile TOOL for music therapy in critical care settings. Due to various factors, however, the program expanded with FLEA brand ukuleles to broaden patient reach beyond guitars: smaller body, fewer and softer nylon strings, easier mastery.

Since our 2010 launch, Martin introduced “0X” bamboo ukes which have cheerful colors and the same rugged construction as their Little Martin guitar. The company’s donation of these instruments is a reflection on our program roots, plus a heartfelt gesture that will undoubtedly touch hundreds of patients in the years ahead.

These colorful Martin ukuleles will be presented to Brian Schreck in recognition of his pioneering spirit and impact. Now located in Louisville, Brian’s music therapy team at Norton Healthcare serves adult and pediatric patients.

For more information about Martin guitars, visit: https://www.martinguitar.com. Treat yourself or a family member to a beautiful Martin! And please consider making a contribution to our “Ukuleles for Hospital Music Therapy” campaign on GoFundMe:

Tuning Out Chemotherapy with Music Therapy

If it makes you feel good and you’re doin’ it, it doesn’t really matter. Just keep doin’ it. –  cancer care and music therapy patient

Take 2 minutes and see how Music Therapy “tunes out chemotherapy”.

Brian Schreck was my lightning rod connection to bring a whole bunch of FLEA ukuleles to music therapy at Cincinnati Children’s. He’s back in Louisville, inspiring children and adults with his magic at Norton Healthcare.

Couldn’t we all live a little more by the music and motto expressed by his patient?

Strumming Banjo Ukulele with Kaitlyn Baker

What makes our FLEA ukulele donation program so rewarding?

The smiles in this picture!

Accompanied by Kaitlyn Baker in the Music Therapy room, a patient from South Carolina enjoys a special moment. The “banjo ukulele” being played is the 68th ukulele donated to Music Therapy at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

Who is Kaitlyn Baker? This question is sure to become rhetorical as her career soars! A young performing artist from Virginia, Kaitlyn shared her talents by performing at the hospital and creating individual patient time.

You can learn more about Kaitlyn at her website and Facebook page (www.kaitlynbaker.com, https://www.facebook.com/KaitlynBakerMusic), but here are two YouTube music videos:

The first highlights the work and “escaping” aspirations in a small mining town. The second video shares the tale of a relationship that turns a bit “incendiary”!

Special thanks goes to Caleb Hastings, MT-BC, the neurologic music therapist at CCHMC who made me aware of this special artist and moment.

Donations on this scale would not be possible without generous support from individuals and businesses, including those who purchase our instruments.

THANK YOU Jill McBride of Forza Marketing, Lina and Elena

External sponsors (businesses + individuals) help us accelerate ukulele donations to reach even more hospitalized children at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

We thank Jill McBride, president of FORZA MARKETING for her support of a brand new instrument going into Music Therapy. It brings our cumulative donations to 61 FLEA ukuleles at CCHMC. Each and every ukulele touches many patients and families.

Visit Jill’s business website at www.forza-marketing.com if your organization is looking for top-notch public relations, marketing, event management and social media expertise. Jill and her team led a terrific workshop last Fall (Cincinnati Business Courier event). Attending it helped me refine a very successful PR campaign for our program: local TV news, several metro area newspapers, even a national trade journal spotlight.

Reaching our golden 100th ukulele donation goal is now even closer. Contact me soon if you want to be the one who leaps us to 100. It will be special!

What can one little ukulele accomplish? My words are no match for photos and words shared by an appreciative mom (Lina) of a CCHMC patient (Elena). Whether exploring the ukulele’s expressive capabilities alone, or smiling as your dad jams away, it enables special moments and memories.

Lina chose to share her family’s story with the world by publishing a terrific product review on Amazon:

We are very pleased with the “purchase” (*ahem, officially it came from Santa Claus) of a beautiful red finish True Joy Acoustic Flea Ukulele with the Music Maker kit. Our six-year old daughter had a rather emergency surgery (thankfully, it all went great!!) at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital followed by a 10-day hospital stay there. On one rather boring day in the Neurosurgery floor, we heard this … CLICK HERE TO READ LINA’S FULL STORY ON AMAZON

Individuals Sharing their Greatest Gift – Ukulele Therapy

The greatest gift is a portion of thyself. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Our retail mission serves ukulele players on a national scale. Sales proceeds help us drive a steady donation of FLEA® ukuleles into hospital music therapy programs –– the heart of our community mission. External sponsors (businesses + individuals) help us accelerate donations to reach even more hospitalized children.

INDIVIDUALS can make a world of difference. Even if hundreds of miles away. Among children “stuck inside of four hospital walls” where days are filled with tests, procedures, waiting and hope. The music therapy program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center also reaches children via StarShine home palliative care. This post recognizes several individuals “giving a portion of thyself”.

Herb Eichen generously sponsored a full set of 4 FLEA ukuleles. One ukulele gets shared and played by many children, one at a time. Ukulele sets greatly extend the reach, plus they enable patient + family ensembles! Click on the story below if you want to discover just how powerful that can be.

Herb’s gift is made in honor of Ms. Mindy Heithaus. Mindy is a friend, an actress, a recent discoverer of the fun and expressive power of playing ukulele. She provided the inspiration for Herb to extend that joy to many children and families served by Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. This joy will resonate for many years to come.

Melanie and Bob Gallagher topped off this donation round with a 5th ukulele. It too has already “gone to work” and signifies our cumulative donations reaching a milestone of 60 FLEA ukuleles. Reaching our Golden 100th ukulele goal is within sight! Contact me soon if you want to be the one who leaps us to 100. It will be special.

Karen Krueger’s family chose to purchase a new FLEA ukulele for Elias Wendland, a little boy featured in the story below. Special child, special family. They are an inspiration for how a family can work together via the power of ukuleles and music therapy to create joy. With Karen’s generosity, Elias will now have his very own ukulele.

EnquirerFeatureHeaderDec2014

CLICK HERE or the IMAGE to read the Cincinnati Enquirer story about Elias and his family. The newsprint edition featured a 3 PAGE story on Christmas morning, extra special!

I deeply appreciate Janelle Gelfand writing this heartfelt story. You can tell her also at jgelfand@enquirer.com.

It is an honor and privilege to help these individuals connect and share their “greatest gifts” via these little instruments. What kind of world could we live in if everybody followed their lead –– whether ukuleles for music therapy or any similar act of kindness.
